Euratex’s definition of ”smart textiles”, a result of the work done by TEG6 (Thematic Expert Group 6 (Smart Textile and Clothing))
In our everyday work with smart textiles different definitions can be found:
Smart textiles:
Passive textile structure capable of responding to external stimulation i.e. from pressure, temperature, light, low voltage current etc.
Wearable technology:
Any electronic device that is small enough and light enough to be worn or carried on the body.
Interactive textiles:
Wearable technology which is woven / sewn into clothing and operated / controlled by an integrated control panel or operation button.
The concept of intelligent textiles is most often used as a synonym for interactive textiles, phase change materials, illuminating textiles, etc. are covered by the above definition of smart textiles when used in clothing or interior.
